D. X=8 distribute the 5 to the 8 and 7 which is 40 + 35 = 5 times x + 5 times 7 Multiply 5 times x and 5 and 7. Add left side to equal 75. Subtract 35 from both sides. Divide by 5 on both sides. Get x = 8 5(8+7) =5x+35 40+ 35 = 5x + 35 75= 5x +35 40= 5x X=8
